A self Story About Fibromyalgia . A doctor actually looked me in the eye and admitted the truth

I had an appointment a few weeks ago that I am still trying to wrap my head around. For the first time in my journey, a doctor actually looked me in the eye and admitted the truth. She told me that there is a massive influx of medical professionals who are now just putting everything down to Fibromyalgia. She admitted that even within the profession itself, there is a growing recognition that this diagnosis is being used as a convenient catch all for anything they cannot be bothered to investigate.

Hearing a doctor say those words out loud was a moment of pure validation but it was also incredibly terrifying. It confirmed exactly what so many of us have felt for years. The second that Fibromyalgia is written on your medical file, it becomes an invisible wall between you and actual healthcare. You stop being a person with individual symptoms and you start being a box that has already been checked.

This is a dangerous problem because it creates a culture of lazy medicine. When a doctor decides that every new pain or every strange symptom is just part of the Fibromyalgia package, they stop looking for anything else. They stop testing. They stop scanning. They stop listening. They ignore the possibility that something else could be going on because it is so much easier to just blame the existing condition.

The danger is that serious, treatable issues are being missed every single day because of this bias. If you have Fibro and you develop a new heart issue or a different neurological problem or even a nutritional deficiency, the chances of it being caught are slim because the doctors have already made up their minds. They have decided that you are a finished puzzle even when the pieces no longer fit.

It turns our diagnosis into a prison. We are expected to just accept a lower quality of life because our pain has been categorized. It makes us feel like we have to scream just to be heard as human beings. We are forced to become our own doctors and our own advocates because the people who are supposed to help us have used our label as a reason to stop trying.

This admission from a doctor proves that we are not being dramatic and we are not imagining things. We are being systematically overlooked by a system that is using a chronic pain label to avoid doing the hard work of diagnostics. It is a betrayal of the duty of care and it is happening to thousands of us.

I am tired of my body being treated like a lost cause. I am tired of new symptoms being dismissed before I even finish describing them. We deserve better than a medical system that uses our suffering as a rug to sweep their curiosity under.
