Does anyone think HEAT or CANNABIS use can cause flare ups?

I feel like heat has definitely been causing them lately. I’m from Austin but lived in Detroit for five years. I was diagnosed with Leukemia in Detroit in 2024. I’ve been back in Austin going on two years.

Last year I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. My lupus test came back positive first time then the retest was negative.

I’ve had a flare up for the last three weeks and it’s affecting my physical and mental health as well as everyday life and work. Then the stress from all of that causes more flare up.

Does Anyone Think HEAT or CANNABIS Use Can Cause Fibromyalgia Flare-Ups?

Living with fibromyalgia often means learning that almost anything can seem to trigger a flare. Many people notice changes after poor sleep, stress, illness, weather changes, or physical activity. Another question that comes up frequently is whether heat or cannabis can trigger symptoms.

The answer is: it depends on the individual. Fibromyalgia affects everyone differently, and what helps one person may make another person’s symptoms worse.

Can Heat Cause a Flare?

Many people with fibromyalgia enjoy warm baths, heating pads, or warm weather because heat can relax muscles and temporarily reduce stiffness. However, others report that excessive heat makes them feel worse.

Possible reasons include:

Overheating can increase fatigue.

Heat may cause dizziness or lightheadedness.

Sweating can lead to dehydration.

Some people become more sensitive to pain during very hot weather.

Heat may worsen brain fog and exhaustion.

If you notice symptoms after being in the sun or in high temperatures, staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and taking breaks in cool places may help.

Can Cannabis Cause a Flare?

Cannabis affects people differently. Some individuals with fibromyalgia report that it helps reduce pain, improves sleep, or eases anxiety. Others find that it can make symptoms worse.

Some people experience:

Increased fatigue

Dizziness

Anxiety or panic

Brain fog

Dry mouth

Poor concentration

For some, certain strains or higher doses may increase discomfort rather than relieve it.

Why Are Experiences So Different?

Fibromyalgia involves changes in how the nervous system processes pain. Because everyone’s body chemistry is unique, responses to heat or cannabis can vary widely.

Factors that may influence your experience include:

Your overall health

Sleep quality

Stress levels

Hydration

Medications

Cannabis type and dose (where legal)

Weather and humidity

Keeping Track of Triggers

A symptom diary can help identify patterns.

Record:

Temperature and weather

Pain level

Fatigue

Sleep quality

Stress level

Physical activity

Foods and drinks

Cannabis use (if applicable and legal)

Medications

After several weeks, you may notice patterns that help you avoid future flare-ups.

Tips During Hot Weather

Drink plenty of water.

Stay in air-conditioned or shaded areas.

Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.

Wear lightweight clothing.

Use cooling towels or fans if needed.

Rest before exhaustion sets in.

If You Use Cannabis

If cannabis is legal where you live and recommended by your healthcare professional:

Start with the lowest effective dose.

Avoid mixing it with alcohol unless advised.

Monitor how different products affect your symptoms.

Stop using it and speak with your healthcare provider if it consistently worsens your pain, fatigue, or thinking.

The Bottom Line

There is no single answer to whether heat or cannabis causes fibromyalgia flare-ups. Some people find heat soothing, while others feel significantly worse in hot weather. Likewise, cannabis may relieve symptoms for some individuals but may increase fatigue, dizziness, or brain fog for others.

The most important approach is to learn how your own body responds, track your symptoms, and discuss persistent or severe flare-ups with your healthcare provider.
