People with Fibromyalgia May Be More Sensitive to Heat and Sound, Study Finds

Many researchers believe nervous system issues are what cause people with fibromyalgia to be hypersensitive to pain. Now, new research suggests these problems may also cause hypersensitivity to heat and sound.

 

People with fibromyalgia are often hypersensitive to muscle, joint, and widespread pain. Now, new research suggests people who have this disorder may be more sensitive to heat and sound, too.

 

In a small study, published in the Journal of Pain, researchers tested 51 people for their response to noise and temperature stimuli. Of the group, 23 people had fibromyalgia and 28 did not. All fibromyalgia patients were tapered off their psychotropic medications (such as antidepressants) and pain medications prior to the study but continued to take medications for any comorbid conditions.

 

Each study participant listened to sounds played through earphones and was asked to rate them based on how mild or intense they sounded. In another part of the study, participants had varying levels of heat or pressure applied to their hands and legs and asked to rate their discomfort.

 

“Using three different stimulus intensities, our psychophysical investigation of auditory sensitivity provided evidence that [fibromyalgia] patients require less sound pressure to report similar loudness ratings than [healthy controls],” the authors found.

 

In other words, people with fibromyalgia demonstrated more sensitivity to sounds, and found lower-volume sounds to be more intense, than people without fibromyalgia.

 

Meanwhile, fibromyalgia patients reported pain at lower levels of pressure and heat compared to what caused healthy participants the same amount of discomfort.

 

“Many previous reports have suggested that central nervous system augmentation in [fibromyalgia] is not limited to pain but may also affect sound, light, taste and smell,” the researchers wrote. “However, until now, no definitive laboratory evidence of abnormal loudness augmentation was available.”

 

The authors noted that such sensitivities are often dismissed as being psychological in nature — or, as patients commonly hear, “it’s all in your head.” This study, albeit small, adds to the evidence that nervous system problems likely make people with fibromyalgia patients perceive sound, temperature, and touch as more severe compared to how people without fibromyalgia experience them.

 

Additional, larger studies will be needed to confirm these findings. The researchers noted that they are also interested in investigating whether fibromyalgia patients might respond differently to light and smell.

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and difficulties with concentration. One of the lesser-known symptoms of fibromyalgia is increased sensitivity to environmental factors such as heat, cold, light, smells, and especially sound.

Many people with fibromyalgia report that hot weather makes their symptoms worse. Even a small increase in temperature can lead to increased pain, fatigue, dizziness, and discomfort. Some individuals feel exhausted after spending only a short time outdoors on a warm day. Their bodies may have difficulty regulating temperature, making them feel overheated more quickly than others.

Heat can also interfere with sleep. Since many fibromyalgia patients already struggle with poor sleep quality, hot and humid conditions may make it even harder to get restful sleep. As a result, pain and fatigue often become more severe the following day.

Sensitivity to sound is another common complaint. Everyday noises that most people barely notice can feel overwhelming to someone with fibromyalgia. Loud conversations, traffic noise, barking dogs, television sounds, or crowded public places may trigger stress, headaches, and increased pain.

Researchers believe this may be linked to the way the brain processes sensory information. In people with fibromyalgia, the nervous system appears to amplify pain signals and other sensations. This process, known as central sensitization, may explain why normal levels of heat or sound can feel intense and uncomfortable.

Living with heightened sensitivity can be challenging. A noisy environment may lead to mental exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, irritability, or anxiety. Likewise, extreme temperatures may limit outdoor activities and affect daily routines.

Many people find relief by making simple lifestyle adjustments. Staying hydrated, wearing lightweight clothing, using fans or air conditioning, and avoiding prolonged exposure to heat can help manage temperature sensitivity. For sound sensitivity, noise-canceling headphones, quiet spaces, and relaxation techniques may reduce discomfort.

Regular exercise, when done gently and consistently, may also help improve overall symptom management. Activities such as walking, swimming, stretching, and yoga are often recommended because they can improve flexibility and reduce stress without putting too much strain on the body.

Good sleep habits are equally important. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, limiting caffeine intake, and creating a cool, quiet sleeping environment can support better rest and help reduce symptom flare-ups.

It is important to remember that fibromyalgia affects each person differently. While some individuals are highly sensitive to heat and sound, others may experience different triggers. Keeping a symptom diary can help identify personal patterns and make it easier to manage symptoms effectively.

Although fibromyalgia can be challenging, understanding these sensitivities can help patients take practical steps to improve their comfort and quality of life. By recognizing triggers and making thoughtful adjustments, many people with fibromyalgia are able to better manage their symptoms and maintain active, fulfilling lives.
